Product Review: Camille Rose

I’ve been hearing a lot of Youtubers and hair influencers talk about this brand Camille Rose, the Curl Maker gel in particular. But when  I saw their prices I honestly wasn’t keen on purchasing anything from them initially. Luckily whilst I was in my local Boots I saw that they were doing a 3 for 2 sale on black hair care products, so I used that as an opportunity to finally try them out!

I bought the Curl Maker styling gel for £16.99, the Algae Renew deep conditioning mask for £15.99 and then I got the Curl Love moisture milk for free (sold at Boots for £11.99). Even with the 3 for 2 offer these are still very pricey compared to most of the other brands that I use. Unfortunately the product junkie in me just couldn’t say no!!

Algae Renew Deep Conditioning Mask, Cocoa & Mango Butter

This mask is supposed to help prevent your hair from breaking, shedding and thinning. It contains aloe leaf juice, shea butter, coconut oil, mango butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, and peppermint.

After shampooing my hair I deep conditioned with this mask, it looks a lot like vanilla yoghurt to me. Consistently wise it’s really thick and so creamy, which is great for thicker type 4 hair. I love the way this mask smells, you can really smell the cocoa with a hint of peppermint coming through. I left this on for 45mins with a shower cap over my hair, when I washed it out my hair felt so silky and soft. I did really like this mask, but it didn’t top my current favourite deep conditioner, and I think the price would stop me from buying this again.

Curl Love Moisture Milk, Rice Milk & Macadamia Oil

The Curl Love Moisture milk is a ‘leave-in conditioning cream’, which can also be used as a moisturiser. I generally don’t like milk type products as I find they are too runny and don’t do much for my hair. But as this is a leave-in not just a moisturiser I wanted to try it out. it was thicker than I expected. Again the smell was really nice, but not too sweet or strong. it contains avocado oil, macadamia oil, castor oil, aloe vera and rice extract. As I applied this product it took awhile to absorb into my hair, but it was light and non greasy. Afterwards my hair felt moisturised and it smelt nice, by the next day my hair did feel a bit dry, I think that was down to the gel I applied after this though.

Curl Maker, Marshmallow & Agave Leaf Extract

The Curl Maker is a defining jelly with marshmallow, agave extract, aloe, coconut oil and castor oil to nourish and define your curls. Out of all three of these products this one was my favourite! It smells so nice and fruity like grapefruit, it comes in a pump bottle which is ideal when doing wash and gos. I raked this jelly through dripping wet hair and then combed it with my Denman three row comb. When it dried my hair was a bit crunchy, but I didn’t get any flakes in my hair. The curls held really well I didn’t have to redefine them or tame any frizz for the next 2 days. Even though it costs almost £17 here in the UK it’s the best gel that I’ve tried so far for a wash an go on my hair type. Others I’ve tried were either too sticky or didn’t hold my curls for more than a day, so this really impressed me.

My Big Chop

So I can finally say that I am fully #TeamNatural! After transitioning for 1 year and 10 months I finally decided to cut off the last of my relaxed ends. My plan was to big chop once I reached the 2 year mark so that I would have enough length to still wear buns and style my hair the way I wanted to. But the last few months my hair was breaking severely and detangling my hair on wash days became so stressful. I had tried deep conditioning and moisturising more often, but I was still losing a lot of hair every time I washed it. A natural hair page I follow on Instagram were doing an advice session in their stories so I told her about the amount of breakage I was experiencing and she suggested cutting my hair as soon as possible… and she was right! My hair looks and feels so much healthier post big chop.

I chose to cut my hair myself as I wanted to be alone and feel comfortable, I wasn’t sure how I would feel after cutting it, if I would like the way my hair looked, if I feel any different about myself or my hair. But as I was cutting my hair I didn’t really feel anything to be honest, I just wanted to get it done.  I did my first wash and go, and after so many years of relaxing my hair it was so satisfying to see the different textures and curl patterns in my hair. I would say that I have 4a hair at the top and the nape, then the rest is a combination of 4b and 4c curl patterns .

It’s been almost 2 months since I big chopped and I have no regrets, in terms of daily styling and night time routines it’s been easier than I thought. I tend to wear one hairstyle for the whole week, so whether it’s a bun, a puff or whatever that determines how I will sleep with my hair at night to make it quicker the next day. My hair is currently collar bone length when stretched and my next goal is to reach armpit length.

Product review: Uniqurl

I came across a brand called Uniqurl on Instagram, the products are specially designed for type 4 hair and it’s a black owned company so I decided to give them a try. My hair has been breaking a lot recently so I decided to purchase the ‘Supreme Moisture kit’ to see if this would help. The supreme moisture kit contains a leave in detangler and a moisture sealing oil. Unfortunately Uniqurl products aren’t currently available to purchase in the UK, so I had to order from their US site and pay the international postage.

The  aloe and coconut leave in dentangler is really thick, creamy and it smells amazing. The smell reminds me of sweets or some kind of dessert. I used the leave in detangler on freshly washed hair and finger detangled. I would normally use a comb but I found that my fingers just glided through my hair with this product, I did use a very generous amount per section. Afterwards I used the moisture sealing oil which contains sweet almond oil, aloe vera oil, palm oil, vitamin E and coconut oil. The next day when I styled my hair is was so soft, moisturised and smelt great.

I will keep using the two together  to see if they help reduce the breakage that I’m experiencing. But I would definitely re purchase the leave in detangler, although the oil worked well with it I imagine I can use any other oil as a sealer.

If you’ve tried any Uniqurl products let me know what you thought!
